Mini Reviews ~ March 2018

Sometimes, I don't have the time or inclination to do a full review for a title. This will typically apply to books that are short stories, part of a mini-series, some novellas, etc. Instead of abandoning these reviews, I will be giving mini reviews. Check them out!

Title: Kitten Around

Review: When the paddles come out, the cats will play...

Paige's job is love. As a partner at a dating agency, which caters to shifter clients, she helps people find their mates. And she has a good track record. Her own love life, though, is more complicated. Her ex just might be stalking her in an attempt to get her back. And a certain handsome dominant keeps rubbing her the wrong way. There is a storm brewing and it may be of the supernatural variety.

Tyler has been looking for the woman he spanked at a convention years ago. No, it's not the most conventional way to meet a lady, but there was something about this one which stuck with him. And when he sees her again at a BDSM club, his cat side wants to claim her just as much as his human side does. Unfortunately, there is another man out there with his eye on Paige and that guy will resort to any trickery to get his hands on her. For good.

This is the first book I've read of the series, but it was still easy enough to follow. There was a bit of jumping around the timeline in the beginning and after that it flowed better. The story had a bit of mystery and suspense to it as well, which I wasn't expecting. It's a shorter book, yet I think we get to know our characters fairly well in the time allowed. I do wish our couple had spent more time together, however.

There was quite a bit of spice in this story. I was surprised to see that it really wasn't heavy in the BDSM at all. And the couple do develop a bit more than just a physical attraction, even if it is mostly through their shifter animals connecting rather than something emotional. The bedroom scene was entertaining and the action toward the end kept me on my toes. This definitely made me interested in other books in the series. Four suns!

Book Blitz: Craving Loyalty Anthology

Craving: Loyalty

Published by: Crave Publishing LLC
Publication date: March 27th 2018
Genres: Adult, Romance, Thriller
Loyalty.
Noun. ‘A strong feeling of support or allegiance.’
For some, loyalty can be bought.
For others, it’s earned. But the thing about loyalty—it can change in an instant. All it takes is one act, one decision, and loyalty shifts to betrayal in the blink of an eye…a sin which cannot go unpunished.
Not in this world.
But sometimes things happen beyond our control, forcing our allegiances to change. Like the mob enforcer who wants nothing more than to seduce the assassin hired to kill him.
Or the FBI agent who falls for the woman whose past holds ties with the mafia.
Yet, no matter the reason or motive, the consequences of betrayal are always deadly.
Because in this world everyone is… Craving Loyalty

SynopsisThere's a very special kind of sweetness to life on Pine Cove Island . . .

Most families have a favorite recipe or two, handed down through generations. The Holloway women are a little different. Emma Holloway, like her grandmother before her, bakes wishes into her delicious cupcakes, granting the recipient comfort, sweet dreams, or any number of good things. It's a strange gift, but it brings only happiness. Until gorgeous, smooth-talking newcomer Hunter Kane strolls into her shop, Fairy Cakes--and Emma makes the mistake of selling him not one, but three Sweet Success cupcakes.

Hunter, it turns out, is opening a fancy new restaurant and bakery right on the waterfront--Emma's competition. To make matters worse, the town committee has decided to split the upcoming summer festival contract between the two, forcing Emma to work with her nemesis. But she can't afford to split her profits. The solution: create a recipe that will make Hunter leave town permanently.

The Holloway charms are powerful. But there are other kinds of magic in the world--like red-hot first kisses, secret glances, and the feeling that comes with falling truly, madly, inconveniently in love . . .

“You.” A woman’s voice called behind him, and he turned to see the cupcake girl marching toward him. She was still wearing that black-and-white frilly apron. With her blond ringlets flying around her delicate face and flinty sparks in her gray eyes, Hunter felt like he was about to be attacked by a sexy Goldilocks.
He searched behind him as she approached, to make sure she wasn’t talking to someone else. “Me?”
She stopped in front of him, a little out of breath from her march down the street. Her chest lifted and fell intriguingly over the white apron lace, but her rosebud mouth was pursed tightly and Hunter took a step back. He had seen that look on women before. Goldilocks was not happy.
“Yes, you,” she said through gritted teeth. “You lied to me. You’re not a tourist.”
“Uh,” Hunter glanced around for a moment. “I’m not?”
“No, you’re not.” She stepped in close, grabbing the pastry box out of his hand. She peered inside and glared up at him in accusation. “And of course. You had to go and eat all three of them, didn’t you?”
He blinked. “But, I paid for them, remember?”
“That’s not the point. You. Ate. Them.”
“Yes,” he said carefully. Maybe Goldilocks liked to spike her morning porridge. “They were delicious?”
Ugh.” She stomped her foot and he tried not to smile. She was irritated, yes, but so damn adorable. Even if she was a little bit odd.
“You shouldn’t have eaten them because you weren’t being honest with me. You’re not just a tourist passing through. You’re the new owner of that.” She pointed to the empty waterfront building that would soon be his fancy new cafĂ© and restaurant.
“Yes.” He held out his hand and gave her his best smile. “I’m Hunter Kane.”
She frowned back at him, ignoring his hand. “I know who you are. And you should have told me that before I gave you those Sweet Success cupcakes.”
“Why?”
“Because I own Fairy Cakes, and now your business is going to take away all my customers.” She looked so upset that Hunter felt a twinge of pity for her, even though she was being ridiculous. Competition was the name of the game in any industry, and restaurant ownership was no exception. “Look, I’m sorry you feel that way, but it’s just business. And why would my eating your chocolate cupcakes be a problem anyway? It’s not like I’m going to steal the recipe or something.”
“Ha,” she scoffed. “As if you ever could. My cupcakes are special, and everyone on this island knows it.”
“Oh . . . kay.” He still wasn’t quite sure what she was getting at.
“And now you’ve gone and eaten them.” She threw her hands up in the air.
Hunter frowned down at her. “Well, excuse me, ma’am. I thought that was the whole point of buying them.”
She jammed her hands onto her hips. “First of all, I’m twenty-five years old. Don’t call me ‘ma’am.’ Save it for old ladies with lapdogs.”
“Fine, Cupcake.” He shouldn’t have said it. He knew it. But something about her righteous indignation made him want to tease her. She gasped, her eyes narrowing on him like an angry feline. He was so dead.

Excerpt & Tour: The Rake and the Bishop's Daughter by Julia Donner

Genre/Age: Historical Romance/Adult
Series: Friendship (Book Three)
Publisher: Self-published

SynopsisSociety’s beloved wastrel, Sir Harry Collyns, pushes his popularity past the point of acceptability when he posed for a statue that creates a social uproar. People line up for blocks to see Handsome Harry in the nude, sculpted by a female artist! Bored with the fuss and scandal, Harry hitches up his fastest team, heads for the country, and a near fatal curricle accident.

When the bandages are removed from his head days later, he discovers the angel-voiced widow who’d cared for him is neither elderly nor as mild as her tone, but a straight-laced do-gooder unimpressed with his flamboyant past and dashing good looks.

Head-battered and heading for a broken heart, he falls into love with Widow Olivia St. Clair, who might be the one woman in England that Harry can’t charm into loving him back.

She peeked a sideways glance at Harry, London’s favorite scamp. Arbiter. RaffinĂ©. Her lover. A flush scorched her skin as she remembered. Soon, he would expect more of that. Wouldn’t he? What if he didn’t? Her stomach sank. Percy refused to touch her while she was pregnant. But then, he never cared for that sort of thing.

“Olivia, is everything all right?”

His question jerked her thoughts back to the present. She noticed that they were heading out of the park.

“Sorry. Wool-gathering.”

“You looked distressed.”

With a tiny head shake, she admitted, “I confess to some concern when it comes to meeting your brother and sister-by-marriage.”

“Don’t be silly. They’re going to take you up and dote on you, just as I will.”

Yes, he’d spoil her and act the gallant but would he ever love her? Would having the comfort of his child be enough? Would she end up ignored, sent off to the country for her dullness, too plain to fit in with his friends and a society that always considered her odd?

A lonely vampire slayer learns to love again.

Jon isn't your average vampire slayer, since he's technically a vampire as well. He's different from the other hybrids in his group and he still hasn't come to complete terms with the monster he has now become. When he comes across a woman on a quest for vengeance, he is intrigued by the mysterious warrior. It's too bad that she hates him before she even knows him, simply because he's a vampire.

Lawan is on a mission to take out as many vampires as she can before meeting her end. But there is one in particular that she wants to rip in half. The same cruel leech who tortured her and left her with scars that can never heal. And even though she doesn't trust vampires, there is one who she can't seem to shake. The vamp who isn't really a vamp. The man who is starting to convince her to come out of hiding and begin to live again.

Overall, I think that this book was a bit darker than the first one. Yes, the characters all had a tragic and brutal past, which is thoroughly explored throughout the story. But also, the tone of this book was more somber than the last. Blaze had a streak of humor which Jon doesn't. We do get a nice scene when Lawan meets the group, which lightened the mood for a while.

Despite the serious nature of the story, I really enjoyed it. Jon was a mystery to me in the first book. I wasn't quite sure what sort of character he would be. And he's quite the complicated fellow, to be honest. I knew he was a vampire (sort of) and struggled with that part of his identity, but I definitely wasn't expecting him to have another voice in his head. That was an interesting twist.

Lawan was another complicated yet well-developed character. That's something you can expect with this series. Flawed and realistic characters, despite their supernatural quirks and abilities. The environment in this book was reminiscent of a horror movie and the whole thing had a spooky feel to it. I kept getting flashes of the movie The Crow in my mind while reading this. The carnival scenes, especially.

As for the romance, it's a slow burn. And it needed to be because our heroine has some serious trust issues to overcome. Even Jon's relationship with the cat took time to evolve. But when the fireworks did happen, that was one steamy scene that was highly impressive. This pair's relationship was different, but in a good way. They were a good match.

In closing...
I'm curious to see who in the group will fall next. Four suns!

Rhys is doing everything he can to keep his ancestors on their family's land. He has no choice but to act as a highwayman at night and rob passing carriages. It's not like a vampire can hold down a steady job during the daylight. But the help he has been giving isn't enough when he learns his family is about to be evicted. The answer to his prayers comes in the form of a pretty young woman with considerable fencing skills.

Vivian has been sent to live with her uncle in order to escape a scandal. How dare she challenge a man to a duel, even if she knows she would likely win. Ladies just don't do that sort of thing. So now she's been whisked away to a distant relative. Little does she know that the highwayman she is about to come across will kidnap her for ransom. And she also would never expect to fall in love with a vampire.

I really enjoyed this book. It was two of my favorite subgenres of romance--historical and paranormal--all woven together. We still had our not-exactly-proper lady being weighed down by the rules of society, but we also had an intriguing hero who is sort of a villain too. Despite how it might sound, it wasn't complicated. But it sure was fun.

Vivian impressed me from the first page. She was courageous and feisty. I love a woman with a mind of her own and our heroine certainly had one she wasn't afraid to use. Rhys was a different sort of hero than you would typically find in a historical romance. Yet, he was exactly what I hoped he would be when I read the blurb. He was kind but dangerous. Thoughtful and tempting. There wasn't a thing I didn't like about him.

The spark between the pair was evident from the moment they met. And their chemistry continued to grow with every scene they shared. They actually developed a lot more of an emotional connection than I had anticipated. And the romance was nicely balanced with moments of spice and some that were sweeter. There was an underlying tension throughout the whole book which kept me turning the pages as quickly as I could. In the end, I wasn't disappointed in the least.

In closing...
This author was new to me, but I am definitely interested in reading more of her work. Four suns!
