SynopsisA lady with a love potion. A Duke who takes it by mistake. Romance and mischief ensues when plans go awry in No Other Duke But You by Valerie Bowman.

SINGLE LADY SEEKS DUKE

Lady Delilah Montebank has her marital sights set on the Duke of Branville. There’s just one problem: he barely knows she exists. But no matter, she’s got a plan to win him over with her charm, her wit—and perhaps the love potion she has in her possession wouldn’t hurt her cause...

Lord Thomas Hobbs, Duke of Huntley, thinks his best friend Delilah’s quest to become a duchess is ridiculous. He’s always said he’d rather give up all the brandy in London than commit to one person for life. Besides, he knows that Delilah’s love potion can’t possibly win over Branville…since she accidentally gave it to him instead. But perhaps this is the excuse he needs to show her he’s always loved her...

Delilah can’t believe she gave the potion to the wrong duke. Then again, Delilah could do a lot worse than win the hand of her handsome best friend. Could it be that the right duke has been before her eyes all along?

Delilah glanced up and down the dim hallway. It was well past three in the morning, she was still dressed in the pink ball gown she’d worn to the party, and she clutched the small vial of Cupid’s Elixir in her sweaty, guilty palm. She pressed her back against the shadowed wall not far from the Duke of Branville’s bedchamber. She could do this. More importantly, she would do this. She’d come this far, hadn’t she? What did a little sneaking about in the middle of the night matter?
She’d got detailed instructions to Branville’s room from Derek, who thankfully hadn’t asked any questions about why she wanted to know. According to him, the room was four doors to the right, just past the staircase on the third floor. The third floor was where all the bachelor gentlemen were sleeping. It would be a complete scandal if she was found lurking about alone at this time of night, but she’d waited until the household seemed quite asleep and then waited a bit longer for good measure. Anyone who saw her now would be skulking about themselves, which meant they would hardly be in a position to judge her. She briefly wondered if she’d run into Lavinia.
It was not as if she was out to do anything particularly scandalous. It was more silly and frivolous than anything else. She’d simply die, however, if Branville woke up and asked her what she was doing sprinkling pixie water in his eyes. She’d already decided to pretend as if she were dreaming, thinking she was Puck in the play. Sleepwalking. That would make all the sense in the world. Wouldn’t it? She swallowed hard. Probably not, but she wasn’t about to let the fear of being caught stop her. Besides, all of her and Lucy’s matchmaking had turned into a colossal mess. If a spray of perfume could sort it out, so be it. Of course, Delilah’s conscience reminded her that she hadn’t offered any of the perfume to Rebecca to use on Thomas. She didn’t want to even contemplate that. She’d already shared it with one other person, and that made her guilty enough. The image of Madame Rosa’s disapproving, craggy face had haunted her all evening.
Delilah shook off the thought and turned her attention back to the matter at hand. Pressing her empty palm against the darkened wall, she inched her way along until she came to Branville’s door. She felt like a spy. This was how professional spies did such things, wasn’t it? Too bad she was too embarrassed by her actions to ask the veritable house full of professional spies who happened to be asleep behind other doors right now.
She transferred the vial into her opposite hand and slowly reached to grasp the door handle. The metal was cold in her bare hand. She’d discarded her gloves, deciding that they would make her actions more clumsy. The last thing she needed tonight was to be more clumsy than usual. Decidedly, she needed to be less so.
She clutched the door handle like a lifeline and closed her eyes, steadying her shaking fingers on the knob. She was close, so close. Praying that the door wouldn’t squeak, she turned the handle slowly. The only sound was the thumping of her own heart in her ears.
When the handle was turned as far as it would go, she pushed it, praying fervently that it wasn’t locked. It took a moment before she realized the door was opening. Its hinges silent, merci a Dieu. Completely silent.
She slipped inside the cool, dark room. Steady, deep breathing came from the bed. Thank goodness, she hadn’t woken the duke with her entrance. She could barely see a thing, but she didn’t dare light a candle. A tiny stream of moonlight filtered into the room through a small opening in the curtains on the far window. She used that to identify the hulking bed in the center of the room. She tiptoed over to it slowly, taking care in case there was anything to trip over. No doubt she would find it if there was.
She made it to the foot of the bed without incident and paused, trying to quell her nerves and dispel her guilt. She clutched the vial more tightly in her palm, shaking with fear and anxiety. Now that she was here, she had no earthly idea how to drop liquid on a man’s eyes without awakening him. Besides, how much of it was she supposed to use? Surely not much. She would employ the tiniest drops possible so as not to disturb him, but she also needed to ensure the perfume touched his eyelids. Tricky business, this being a fairy. She had a sudden appreciation for Puck.
Holding her breath, she lifted her skirts with her free hand and tiptoed to the right side of the bed. Because it was summer, the bed curtains weren’t drawn. The window was open, and a slight breeze blew through the crack in the curtains.
The outline of the duke’s body was barely visible in the moonlight. He was turned away on his side, his back to her, his face toward the window. She would have to lean over his body to sprinkle the elixir on his eyes. The bed was tall. She must carefully climb up to do this task properly. She only hoped she didn’t jostle the mattress enough to wake him.
She waited in silence for a few moments to ensure his breathing remained steady, then she carefully lifted first one knee and then the other, bracing them on the mattress and pulling herself up, still clutching the vial. She winced as he moved slightly in his sleep, but he kept his face turned away. Blast it.
Once she was fully atop the bed, she paused and hoped the hammering of her heart didn’t wake him. He smelled good, a combination of soap and maleness that she wanted to breathe in. There was something vaguely familiar about his scent.
Shaking away that unhelpful thought, she moved gingerly across the mattress on her knees until she came to a stop at his side. His shirt was off. The beam of moonlight hit his smooth, muscled arm. She swallowed. The man’s chest was positively swoon-worthy. She took a deep breath to calm her nerves and uncorked the vial. Then she carefully leaned over as far as she could to locate his eyes. They remained shrouded in the dark, but she took a guess as to their general direction and tipped the little vial as slowly and carefully as she could. He turned then, and she was afforded enough light to see that the first tiny drop of liquid did indeed fall directly onto his eyelid.
He blinked, and she held her breath. When he settled back into sleep, she closed her eyes and said a brief prayer that she would get away with it a second time before tipping the vial once more to allow another tiny drop to fall on his other eyelid.
He blinked and rubbed at his eyes while Delilah held her breath again, paralyzed with fear. Soon, he settled back into his pillow and his breathing returned to its steady pace.
She pressed a hand to her throat. It was over. She was done. All she had to do was extract herself from the bed and the room without being seen or heard. The difficult part was behind her.
Still praying he wouldn’t stir, she backed away from the duke. Slowly. Slowly. She’d nearly made it to the edge of the bed when he flipped over to face her. A beam of moonlight slid over his sleeping features.
Delilah gasped.

Friends to lovers--done right!

This book would make a great movie. There are a lot of colorful characters, our main couple are incredibly likable, and there is a good deal of humor here also. The blurb mentions the love potion and I was a little disappointed to see it only made an appearance toward the end of the story. However, once it does come into play, boy does it make a splash.

I was thoroughly entertained from start to finish. I always tend to enjoy a friends-to-lovers type of story and this one was done well. Our couple have a tight bond, which we can see from the beginning. But we also get to watch it bloom into something more. Jealousy replaces comfort and our heroine starts to see her BFF in a new light.

There are a lot of characters in this book, so that is a lot of names to keep straight. We are introduced to the more important players, which makes it easier. But the rest of the secondary characters are sort of just tossed in. So reading the other previous books in this series would be helpful. Despite the many faces, this was a fairly easy story to follow along with.

If you enjoy a friends-to-lovers story as much as I do, this one is for you! Four suns!

Detective Macey Carpenter has been on the trail of a vicious attacker for weeks, with nothing more than a vague description of a red-eyed man to go on. She has no clue she’s hunting demons, and if the evidence doesn’t stop disappearing, she’ll never solve the case.

Before Luke Mason becomes alpha of the Crescent City Wolf Pack, he has to end the French Quarter’s demon infestation and keep the police from discovering the truth. But when he falls head over tail for the feisty detective investigating the crimes, supernatural secrets aren’t the only things at stake.

Luke has to mate with another werewolf or he’ll sacrifice his position as alpha. But as heat builds between the pair, he discovers Macey has a few secrets of her own. She may hold the key to ridding New Orleans of its demons, but his feelings for her could tear the pack apart.

Macey fell for... the leader of the pack...

Related image

When Macey's current case leads her to a handsome and mysterious man, she isn't sure if she should follow her heart or her head. Luke seems to live a complicated life and Macey has her own hands full with her detective work. To make matters worse, she is starting to wonder if her mystical gift isn't the only supernatural occurrence happening in the city. But does she really believe that werewolves are real? Or demons?

Luke knows werewolves are real because he is one. And he knows this pull he feels to Macey is because she's supposed to be his mate. It's unfortunate that he can't be with her due to the rule that alphas can only mate with other werewolves. While he tries to figure out how to handle his growing affection for the feisty human detective that he can't have, he has to deal with the multiplying demons threatening the city. And time is running out.

This is the first book of the series and we're immediately tossed into the middle of an ongoing investigation into rapes of women by demons. The bad guys are pretty vicious, though we don't see a lot of the graphic details, at least until the brief action sequence near the end. There isn't a lot of gore, but the tone of the story was sort of dark, so don't expect a light and fluffy paranormal romance. This has more grit than that.

I think the one thing that I didn't love about the story was how stubborn and overly-feminist the heroine was. I can handle a strong woman, but it seemed like Macey tried a little too hard to be independent. I was in the military, so I understand that it's hard to be a woman in a mostly male profession. However, she insinuated early in the story that there is something wrong with a woman choosing to take care of the home and family, instead of working. There isn't.

But that was really my only complaint and it's not a very big one. Macey's stubbornness does get in the way of her happy ending a few times, but that's only one of the conflicts in the story. There is also an ambitious pack member who wants to take Luke's job as alpha. And you can't forget about the fact that Luke can't even mate with a human to begin with. Oh, and there might be a demon running around and raping women to impregnate them with demon babies. So yeah, there's a lot going on here.

The pacing is steady and the story never lulled for me. It did take me a while to read it, but only because work and family obligations always seemed to get in the way. Yet, it was easy enough to pick up and continue, no matter where I had left off. I'm curious to see who in the pack will find their mate next and whether a certain rogue werewolf will end up joining the pack. I liked her character quite a bit.

In closing...

SynopsisSummers are supposed to be fun, right? Not mine. I’ve got a job at my dad’s company, which is sponsoring a college scholarship competition. I just found out that, in addition to my job assisting the competing interns, I’m supposed to vote for the winner. Totally not what I signed up for.

My boss is running the competition like it’s an episode of Survivor. Then there’s Carlos, who is, well, very distracting––in a good way. But I can’t even think about him like that because fraternizing on the job means instant disqualification for the intern involved.

As if that’s not enough, an anonymous informant with insider intel is trying to sabotage my dad’s company on social media...and I’m afraid it's working.

Much as I’d love to quit, I can’t. Kristoffs Never Quit is our family motto. I just hope there’s more than one survivor by the end of this summer.

Forbidden love...with a side of geek!

Laurel misses her dad. He's always working and they don't get to spend time together anymore. That's what compels her to volunteer to work at her father's company for the summer. However, she starts to regret that decision after she becomes the person responsible for choosing a winner of a scholarship. She can't possibly see how she's supposed to choose one intern, all of whom are deserving of the money. And her job becomes even tougher when she starts to fall for one of the contestants. All is not fair in love and summer internships...

This book was adorable in so many ways. Our hero was more interesting than I predicted he would be. And while we never see things from his point of view, I think his expressions and behavior is detailed well enough to get a good idea of what he's thinking and the kind of person he is. There were a couple of times when he did things that I didn't quite understand and that would have been a good time to switch to his POV, but it didn't diminish the story much for me without it.

The whole idea of Laurel choosing the winner of the scholarship made some sense to me. The way her father constantly acted as if there was a secondary reason he chose her for the job, however, did not. He and Laurel's mother made comments that hinted toward there being a significant reason for allowing Laurel to come work for him. I kept waiting to see what it was, but nothing was ever revealed. I never got a good idea of what her plans for the future were either. But the plot was pretty interesting, though. I was never bored by the story and the pacing was steady.

As for the romance, it was certainly the best part. I think I fell for Carlos the moment he wrote those cute notes in Laurel's notebook. And he just continued to impress me throughout the book. Laurel was cute and her geeky side made me laugh on more than one occasion. The pair together were simply adorable. I rooted for them to find a way to be together and I have to say that the ending was super cute, as well. Overall, this was a good read that left me smiling.

Excerpt

Walking through the revolving door, I’m greeted by a security desk before I can access the elevators. Shit. I should message Glen again to say I’m going to be even later than I expected.

I approach the tall man who looks as annoyed as me for being here on a Friday night. “Hello, I need to head to” —I glance at the envelope— “Heiberman and Lipe Law Firm.”

He taps a few keys. “I think they’re closed already.” His face is void of any emotion.

“Can you tell me if there’s a…” my eyes glance to the folder again. “Mr. Bennett?” The last name causes my stomach to gurgle.

“Let me call up.” He presses some buttons on the phone, listens for a second and then hangs up. “No one is answering.”

I lean over the counter, splashing on my please eat out of my hand smile. “It’s Friday. You want to go home. I want to go home. I promised my boss that I’d get these on the desk of Mr. Bennett.” I cough, bile rising up my throat with the mention of the name. Victoria is really going to have to take care of this in the future. “Can I please just go up to their floor and see if their door is unlocked?”

He shakes his head, giving me a look I’m way too familiar with, silently asking if I’m crazy.

“What can I do?” I ask. “Money? A date?” I look at his left hand. “No. Are you a fan of winter sports?” I’ll totally pull Skylar into this. “My cousin is a Winter Classics skier and her fiancé—” A large palm lands in front of my face.

“Give me your name.” His fingers position on the keyboard.

“Chelsea… Chelsea Walsh.”

He types my name in, and I smile when he pulls a visitor badge out.

“Thank you, thank you, thank you.” I take it from his hand and put it over my head.

“If no one is up there, they have a drop box beside their door. You can leave your package there.”

I thank him again and walk steadily to the elevators, dodging people desperate to start their weekend.

I end up riding the elevator by myself to the thirty-third floor. The elevator doors ding open and I file out, my head swiveling right and then left. Spotting the door with Heiberman and Lipe Law Firm, I head over to it to find a list of the names of all the associates and thankfully there’s Bennett second from the top.

Hold on Glen, I’m almost on my way.

My hand pulls on the frosted glass door and it must be my lucky day because it opens.

I step into the darkened reception area. Looking around, I find no one. Heading down a hallway, my eyes zero in on the names on the doors while peeking my head into vacant offices. Finally, after passing the conference room, I see the last name Bennett and peek my head inside to find it empty with the light on. Hopefully that means he’s in the bathroom or something.

I pull out my cell phone, seeing Glen has messaged me back, but instead of responding to his I shoot one off to my boss Hannah.

Me: Mr. Bennett isn’t here. Can I drop the envelope on his desk?

Hannah as usual, replies instantly.

Hannah: Sure. Just leave it somewhere he’ll see it first thing on Monday.

Me: Got it.

I drop my cell phone back into my purse and slowly walk across the room and place the envelope on the chair. As I straighten up, I notice a baseball sitting next to the keyboard like someone had been playing with it and just set it down.

My jaw drops and my gaze scatters across every surface, spinning around investigating each piece of art, photos, anything I can find to tell me this isn’t…

Then as though I hadn’t breathed the entire time I’ve been in this office, the smell of him hits my nostrils. The once familiar scent of the ocean breeze, his deodorant and fresh linen from his clothes. He never was a cologne guy.

Other than a picture of a dog on the table behind his desk, it’s filled with baseball memorabilia of the Cubs. A die-hard Cub’s fan certificate is framed and on display, so others know he didn’t jump on the bandwagon two years ago when they won the World Series. It’s proof that his family has borne the Cubbie fever for generations.

“Do you make it a habit of sneaking into people’s offices?” His voice is coy and flirtatious.

I squeeze my eyes shut then grip the edge of the desk before my knees give out. Shivers run up and down my spine.

Crazy train. All aboard!

“You can at least show your face,” he says, continuing his usual play. “I promise I don’t bite.”

“Unless I want you to.” I spin around, my knuckles white as they tighten on the edge of the desk.

Now it’s his jaw that slackens as he realizes his ex-wife is standing in the middle of his office.

Chelsea just walked into the office of the one man in the entire world that she didn't expect to see. Or want to reconnect with. The guy who left her heart broken and carrying the title of 'divorcee'. Her ex-husband, Dean. She's not sure if it's a coincidence, but it's definitely bad luck that he's also going to be working with their company the near future. She won't be able to escape him even if she tries. And he seems determined to worm his way back into her life.

Dean has changed since he lost everything he ever loved. Watching his wife walk away from their marriage was an eye-opening experience and he has done all he can over the past few years to become the man that Chelsea deserves. Now, he's ready to convince her of that fact. They belong together, always have. He knows her better than anyone and he's not afraid to play dirty to get her back in his life. This time, for good.

This story was a little hit or miss for me at times. I enjoy this pair of authors' writing, even in this book. There is always a good dose of sexual tension, some humor, and a nice amount of steamy adult time. But where I'm used to reading books with dual point-of-view, I need more from a single point-of-view story. The one character's vision has to give two sides of a story. If it doesn't, I can't really connect with both characters.

That's what happened here. I had trouble getting to know our hero, since we don't get any alone time with him and our heroine's thoughts of him are pretty sad and negative for the first half of the book. I tried to understand her reasoning, since we know the couple had a painful past. But even as clues are given here and there as to what went down, I still don't understand exactly what happened to make the pair divorce in the first place. I might have gotten a better idea if we had both sides of the story.

Other than my complaint above, there wasn't much else I disliked about this. When the hero finally grew on me, I rooted for him to convince our heroine to give him a shot. The tension between the pair is not only sexual. There is some awkwardness there, due to their history. But I enjoyed seeing Dean win Chelsea over. The spicy bedroom scenes did not disappoint and the ending was sweet. There is a brief cameo of a few characters from prior series in here, as well.

In closing...
Hannah's book is next and her beau is none other than her ex-husband's divorce attorney! Sounds like fun! Four suns!

Breaking the rules has never felt so good.

Image result for breaking rules gif

Kylie is tired of being the good girl. The one who never breaks the rules and spends her time alone in her room, reading her fantasy novels and not really living up her teenage years. She's now a senior and hasn't even had her first real kiss. But no more. She is determined to make this last year one to remember and she's even made a list of trouble to get into. And then she accidentally loses her list...

Leo found Kylie's list. And if anyone is going to help her to fulfill the items on that list, especially the one about her first kiss, it's going to be him. He's had a crush on her for years and he sees this might be his one opportunity to show her just how great they could be together. There's just one problem. Sins of another threaten his future with Kylie. If she learns of his secret, she may never look at him the same way again. And all secrets eventually come to light...

I think this book would be better titled "The Checklist of Rebellion" because that's what it was. A list of things our heroine typically wouldn't do, most of which were on the rebellious side. Like pulling a prank. Or skinny dipping. And I love the idea of our hero helping our heroine to get to know her naughty side. It sounded like a fun ride. And it was. But it also had a bit of a darker side to it, as well. I won't give away what the secret is, but I will say that it took me by surprise.

Leo was such a sweetheart. We see that from the beginning. I actually wish we had opened with a chapter from Leo's point-of-view first, so we could have seen his infatuation with Kylie before we learn about her quest for rebellion. Instead, we have to hear in his thoughts that he's had a far away crush on her for years. I think it would have been more believable to see it, first. But that aside, I found Leo to be charming and adorable. I rooted for him, immediately.

Kylie was a pretty good heroine. Her relationship with her sister was cute and believable. I loved her obsession with making candy. No lie, I was craving sweets while reading this. The plot was great and I looked forward to each and every item on the list. I felt terrible for the pair once the twist was revealed and I loved the ending. The pacing was mostly steady and the couple had pretty good chemistry. I have few complaints. It was enjoyable!

In closing...
Meg and Luke's story looks interesting and I may pick that one up in the future. Four suns!

Not only does he want the baby, but he wants her too. And he's not shy about it. Braxton is determined to win Cara over and the baby is just an excuse to keep her closer. But even with a baby in common, the pair are practically strangers, and it's going to take time and trust to turn their relationship into something more.

This book started off really well. The pair were thrust into a difficult situation and they both handled things in a believable way. I enjoyed watching them get to know one another and learn to depend on each other. I also liked the way Braxton stood up for Cara against her parents. I am always a fan of loyal characters. And the romance was spicy and plentiful. Braxton was a great character and I loved the way he jumped into this, head-on. That was admirable and I enjoyed reading his point-of-view.

The conflict was understandable, I think. Seeing the person you're falling in love with in a conspicuous situation could twist anyone up. But Cara's reaction was a little puzzling to me. If that fight is the worst one that they ever have, they are living in dreamland. And if that is all it takes to make her want to pack up and walk away, I'm not sure what to think about their happy ending either. However, I'll try to be optimistic and the ending was really cute.

I must say that I am confused and disappointed with the cover of this book. While it has little to do with my enjoyment of the novel, I was surprised to learn that our hero has tattoos covering nearly his entire upper body. Yet, the man in the cover photo is spotless. I know it's hard to find a cover model that matches every book, but come on! This isn't even trying and that's a little sad.

In closing...
This was a fun read and the first book of the series looks good too. Four suns!
