Author Interview with Anni Fife

• Brief introduction? In 3 sentences or less, tell me about yourself.

I had a successful career in television for over thirty years. Then, two years ago, I had an epiphany—I needed to follow my passion rather than a healthy monthly pay cheque. In the space of a month, I shut down my business, packed up my city apartment, and moved to a small seaside village. And I’ve never regretted the move once! Last year, my debut novel Luke’s Redemption was published and was a RONE Award Finalist for Steamy Contemporary. And I’ve just published my second book, Gray’s Promise which I’m delighted to share, is already garnering five star reviews. I’m riding a passion wave and loving every minute of it.

• What genre do you write and why?

After a year of trying to find the perfect genre description for my books, I’ve arrived at Steamy Romantic Suspense. I like to write for my own tastes. So if you like contemporary romance with a lot of angst and some suspense; hot alpha heroes with damage; smart sassy heroines, also with some damage; and burning chemistry that drives lots of conflict, and even more heat—then my books should be right up your ally.

On a more serious note, I read mainstream fiction and thrillers, but my favorite leisure genre is Romance. So why not join the two? We’re surrounded by so many NOT ‘Happily Ever After’ stories that I find it relaxing to lose myself in a story of steamy romance, unpredictable suspense, and a guaranteed HEA. This gets even better when it’s my job to choose the hot alpha male, the sassy intelligent gal, the break-ups, the make-ups.... you get the picture.

• Any hobbies?

I enjoy reading, scuba diving, and good food. But my favorite pastime, although it’s probably not classed a hobby, is taking long walks on the beach searching for treasures the waves have brought in, especially my favorite muse, the pansy shell. Otherwise, you’ll find me hanging with my friends, drinking red wine around a barbecue, and gabbing about everything and nothing.

• Do you have a favorite book or author?

I have two. They are in different genres but both have the ability to move me to tears. The first is Wally Lamb. The man takes years to finish each novel, and no wonder. His characters are filled with an astonishing depth of humanity. I can only hope to reach a fraction of his brilliance in my own writing. The other is the awesome Kristen Ashley. When she releases a new book, I turn it into a day of celebration. Out come the red wine, chocolates and a snuggle pillow. Then I curl up and spend the whole day alternatively laughing and weeping—and, of course, crossing my legs to contain the delicious tingles of desire. Her alpha heroes invade my dreams. Her heroines are funny and beautifully accessible. And her stories are both heartbreaking and uplifting.

• What’s on your music playlist?

Beautiful War by Kings of Leon.
Everything by Adele, Ed Sheeran, Daughtry and Red Hot Chili Pepper’s new album, The Getaway. And Diana Krall. Music to chill with or make love to!

• Do you use an outline or just jump right in?

I’m a serious plotter and planner. I write detailed outlines and crazily fill them with reams of dialogue. Each scene is planned before I start the real writing. But a weird thing happens as I progress: my characters often refuse to behave like they are supposed to. Sometimes they just stop talking before the scene is finished. Or they don’t talk at all. Instead of freaking out, I get a kick out of it and just Cut & Paste and plop the misbehaving piece of dialogue or section of scene wherever it wants to move to. The spooky thing is, the change is invariably for the better!

• What is your next project, after this?

I’m completely enmeshed in Eva’s Promise (King Security Book 3) and delighted that my publisher, The Wild Rose Press contracted this book on a brief synopsis. It’s due for release in Fall 2018. I prefer not to offer a summary about a WIP until I’ve finished the first draft. It gives me a breathless feeling, like I’m trapping my characters in a pre-determined story. Instead, I’ll share with you the opening paragraph to the synopsis I sent my publisher.

“Eva’s Peace begins amidst a crime that most police admit they dread more than any other—a missing child. Grace Young, eighteen months old, has been snatched from her nanny’s car. We get our first glimpse of Grace’s mother, Scarlett Eva Young, through the eyes of the lead detective assigned to the case, Detective Tom Payne of the Los Angeles Police Department. He stands alone in the observation room, watching from behind one-way glass as her and her ex-husband are interviewed. Tom finds Eva difficult to read. She is undeniably beautiful but her face is a blank mask. A frozen blank mask. In his experience, this meant she either didn’t give a damn. Or she gave too much of a damn. He wanted to believe it was the latter. For the child’s sake, he prayed it was the latter.”

When the girl you love wakes up engaged to someone else...

This was a second chance story if there ever was one. Two people with a strong history who have spent years suffering without each other are brought back together again. But they have demons between them (and some of their own) that they have to face before they can find a happy ending. It was intense at times, pulling at my heartstrings over and over again.

Zoey has lived through a nightmare. After her family was slain right in front of her, she woke to find that she was engaged to the wrong brother. A man she didn't love and she can't understand why she would have agreed to his proposal. The problem is that she can't remember anything that happened that night, other than the dreaded chocolate cake which started the whole thing.

Gray has finally found a place in his life where he is truly content. The colleagues at his security firm have become his family and Gray has all but forgotten his cruel mother and jealous brother who stole Zoey away from him. And he may be a cranky son of a gun, but at least he has found a purpose. And okay, he might not have moved on since losing his heart all those years ago.

Zoey's therapist suggests the only way to remember what happened is to go back to the scene and it will only work if she feels safe. Gray is the only person to ever make Zoey feel that way, so she has no choice but to ask for his help. But when the pair reunite, old wounds open and they will have to uncover the truth before either of them can move on.

The book opens with a rather powerful chapter that left my mouth hanging open. Everything that happened with Zoey and her family was pretty brutal. It wasn't really described in gory detail or anything, but it was still a lot to swallow. I felt horrible for both of our characters as they were ripped apart with so many questions left unanswered.

The plot is actually a lot slower after that, which gave me time to breathe. And there isn't much action until the last quarter of the book. The pages in between are mostly where our couple learn to trust each other again and come to terms with their situation. I was never bored, even when the story slowed to a crawl right before Mina's party. It always picked back up again.

For the romance, our couple definitely had some sizzling chemistry. They were pretty great together. Gray had a dominant streak and it came out in the bedroom scenes. It's not quite into BDSM territory or anything, but his alpha personality was noticeable. Zoey was no weak character, though. I rather liked the both of them, separate and together. 

The end of the book sort of went how I thought it would. The moment I found out how the horse was killed, I figured out who the murderer was. I wasn't quite sure about the rapist, but it all eventually did come out.

In closing... 

I'm curious about King's relationship with his roommate and I wonder who will be next! Four suns!

Author Interview with Patricia Josephine

• Brief introduction? In 3 sentences or less, tell me about yourself. 

I am a born and raised Michigander, meaning I can use my hand to tell you where I live. Creativity has always been a part of my life. I used to think I sucked at writing. 

• What genre do you write and why? 

I’m bad and haven’t really stuck to one genre, but all my stories contain some fantastic element: vampires, werewolves, fairies, aliens, angels. Once I came up with a story idea that didn’t have any of that, but I had zero interest to write it. It was too close to real life, and I like to escape when it comes to reading. If you pick up one of my books, forget the world, and let me take you for a ride. *Warning, I may try to punch you in the feels. 

• Is writing your day job? If not, what else do you do? 

I can say it is now. A bad back and Interstitial Cystitis forced me to quit my job at a deli/coffee shop. I wasn’t able to do it without pain and effectively, and that wasn’t fair to my coworkers or boss. Plus, I had no energy for self-care.

• Any hobbies? 

Oh yeah! I have been knitting since I was, like, seven years old, I make jewelry, and I paint. I even have a little Etsy shop called Hi-Five MI Designs.

• Do you have a favorite book or author? 

Kerrelyne Sparks and Zac Brewer are two of my favorite authors. Mostly because both have written vampire series and I LOOOOOOOVE vampires.

• Do you write one thing at a time or have multiple projects going at once? 

I usually focus on one thing at once. That doesn’t mean another will distract me and I’ll switch, but I tend to try to finish one story at a time.

• Do you use an outline or just jump right in? 

I am a complete panster. Once I plotted a story out and lost the motivation to write it because I already knew what would happen.

• Do you ever dream or daydream about your characters? 

That’s how my stories start. I get a scene in my head and start thinking about it when I’m lying in bed and trying to sleep. 

• What is your next project, after this? 

I’m currently bouncing between rewriting a post-apocalyptic YA called Leaves of Fall (humanity and trees are at war) and writing the sequels to Mistakes of the Past and Abducted Life.

Real love can survive anything--even alien abductions?

But just because she appears to be undamaged doesn't mean she is. And college life hasn't been easy for her. She'd give up everything if only to see Evan again.

Though Evan tries to keep his distance and watch Savannah from afar, he can't help but interfere in her life. Discovering Evan is alive is only one of the surprises Savannah receives when she catches the shadow following her. But even if she can learn to love the new version of Evan, there are other players in the game who threaten their future together.

Sci-fi romances have been worming their way into my reading list over the past year. I'm not even a big space and alien fan, yet there is something akin to fantasy within these books. So much creativity to pair the unknown with love stories. I'm really growing to love them, which is why I agreed to review this one. And I'm glad I did.

Savannah and Evan were both likable characters with distinct voices and some serious obstacles to overcome. This is a novella so there is a lot of story packed into a little space and we get a bit of backstory along with the current happenings. It didn't slow down once it started, with little surprises tossed into just about every chapter. I didn't want to put it down once I started reading it and finished it within like 2 hours. Easily kept me glued to the pages.

The romance is sweet between our pair but there is also some naughty action here too. And poor Savannah with her full moon troubles made for some shocking events that were highly entertaining. I felt our couple's chemistry was believable and made me root for them from the start. It was a little hard to envision Evan's new self, but I got the gist of it.

I do think the writing felt a little 'off' right after Savannah discovers Evan is alive. Until that point, everything ran smoothly. But when it happened, Savannah didn't really freak out as much as I expected her to. She seemed to take everything in stride, which was odd to me, all things considered. I think that chapter was a little rushed in all the excitement. But other readers may not feel this way.

Due to the length, since this is a novella, there are some questions that are left a little vague or unanswered at the end. I won't say what they are since that might go into spoiler-ish territory but I did wonder what happened with the roommate. However, there is a solid and satisfying ending here, so I definitely wasn't disappointed in the end.

In closing...

Quick and interesting read with mystery, romance, and a few surprises along the way. Four suns!

Author Interview with Kathy Kulig

• Brief introduction? In 3 sentences or less, tell me about yourself. 

I think most writers get hooked on books at an early age, and tend to look at the world with a more curious eye than the average person. That’s me. I’ve been writing for a long time, but was formally published in romance in 2004.

• What genre do you write and why?

I’ve written in a variety of genres, but mostly paranormal, sci-fi and contemporary romance. I’ve been a huge sci-fi fan since I was a kid—movies and books. So, it’s no wonder I gravitate toward those stories in my writing.

• Is writing your day job? If not, what else do you do?

Writing is not my day job. I wish it was! During the day, I work as a cytotechnologist—I look for cancer under the microscope. Yes, I’m a science geek. I also bartend a couple days a week.

• Do you have a favorite book or author?

There’s no way I could chose a favorite book or author. I read such a variety. I do think authors like Ray Bradbury and Arthur C. Clarke influenced my love and curiosity about writing.

• Do you write one thing at a time or have multiple projects going at once?

Right now, I have many projects going on. I’m finishing 4 books in the Dark Realms series, working on a box set for a trilogy, and considering another dragon shifter story.

• What book that you’ve read has had the biggest effect on you?

There are a bunch. But a couple that stand out would be Anne Rice’s Vampire Chronicles like Interview with a Vampire, and Jude Deveraux’s The Knight in Shining Armor.

• What is your least favorite part of the writing and publishing process?

Probably marketing. It’s always difficult finding new ways to get readers to discover your books and marketing romance books keeps changing.

• Do you use an outline or just jump right in?

A little of both. I start with a basic outline, 3 act structure and key plot points. But as I start to write, the story may change and go into different directions.

• Do you ever dream or daydream about your characters?

All the time! I imagine them having conversations with me and other characters. I imagine what I’d say to them, if I met them. Weird, I know.

• What is your next project, after this?

After I release all 4 books in the Dark Realms series, I’ll either work on another dragon shifter book, connected to Dragon Witch, or finish a vampire series that’s almost completed.

• What is your most prized possession? An old poetry book I inherited from my grandmother. A high school friend of hers moved to Hawaii and gave it to her in 1940. The book was published by a small press in Hawaii and the cover is made from woven sea grass. There are seascape drawings and poetry about the sea and life. I also found a photograph of my grandmother’s friend’s family. Husband, wife and two small children looking very happy. The photo was dated a few months before Pearl Harbor. I always wondered what had happened to them.

A steamy read with secrets, sex, and dragons!

Brayden is in a bit of a pickle. He's lost his pilot license at the worst possible time, when a volcanic eruption is about to wipe out a whole group of people on another planet. In order to get to them in time, he'll have to barter with a wicked captain and betray someone he cares deeply about. He just hopes the plan will work. And that his woman might forgive him some day.

Jaida is thrilled to see Brayden again, but she's hesitant to pick up where they left off. She knows he won't be staying, despite his claims, and his leaving will break her heart all over again. But even though he's clearly keeping secrets, she has a few of her own. And they're really big...and just might breathe fire too...

When I first read the blurb for this novella, I thought, "What in the world?" and re-read it just to be sure that I wasn't seeing things. Yes, this book really is a mixture of sci-fi space themes and fantasy dragons. I was immediately intrigued by the idea and decided to read/review it. I'm glad I did because this was a fun book.

Despite the length, there is a lot of story told here. We move around quite a bit and the pacing was just quick enough to keep me engaged but not too fast to where I couldn't keep up. There were some surprises tossed in there too. Definitely didn't see the one about the dragon coming. Whoa.

I liked both of our main characters who had a bit of history with each other. They also had great chemistry and a whole lot of naughty fun together. While some might be irritated by Brayden's keeping secrets from Jaida, it didn't really bother me. They each had some truths to tell throughout the story. I sped through this novella and wanted more in the end. That's usually a good sign.

In closing...

I can't wait to see what happens next in the series and which worlds we get to explore. Four suns!

Author Interview with Sienna Matthews

• Brief introduction? In 3 sentences or less, tell me about yourself.

Hi, I'm Sienna Matthews, co-author with Madison Blake in Tempting Their Best Friend. I'm a bespectacled, mild-mannered office employee by day with hopes of one day quitting the day job and writing full time. I'm one of those who often complain about not having enough hours in a day to do everything I want, and I always thought I could be best served with 48-hour days.

• What genre do you write and why?

I write erotic romance, because I love the freedom that the genre brings in terms of sexual exploration. For example, in my upcoming book, Lust on Camera, a married couple (Brent and Lindsey) explores bringing in a third person (the husband's best friend Rory) into the relationship. How would this affect their relationship, especially since Lindsey has had a crush on Rory since the beginning? For Rory, what does it mean to lust after his best friend's wife…and his best friend? How would this impact his friendship with Brent?

And, you know, in psychology, they say within each of us is the "id", which operates on the pleasure principle. I'm just letting the id in me out to play.

• Is writing your day job? If not, what else do you do?

I wish! In my day job, I'm a credit analyst in a bank, poring over boring numbers and writing credit reports for loan application approvals. You can see now why I'd need the creativity that writing brings.

• Any hobbies?

You mean aside from reading? That already takes most of my time. Well, if you insist, it would be cooking. To expand on the number recipes in my mental menu, I'm currently trying to learn how to bake.

• What is your least favorite part of the writing and publishing process?

Editing is a nightmare, and I don't know anything about marketing. I've since hired Book Unleashed as my publicist to help me out on the marketing front, and they're doing a great job so far. For editing though, I guess I'm stuck with it. LOL Can't very well hand it off to someone else.

• Do you use an outline or just jump right in?

I want to be one of those authors who write by the seat of their pants--sounds more exciting that way. Sadly though, I'm one of those people who need an outline to guide my writing. However, it's not a rigid outline. I usually only have the bare bones of the story, allowing me plenty of room to maneuver and navigate and unleash my creativity.

• Do you ever dream or daydream about your characters?

Always! I can't write unless I hear them talking in my head. Sounds weird, I know, but they aren't alive to me otherwise. It's only when they talk that they come alive for me, and that's when I know it's time to write their story.

• What is your next project, after this?

The next book in the series is titled Lust on Camera, as I'd mentioned earlier. It's due to be published in October or November. I'm also currently developing a series of books of erotic fairy tales. These are fairy tales you've never read before--erotic or otherwise!
