Wish I could have loved this more...

Grace has traveled halfway across the country in order to find her runaway bride sister. Shortly after arriving, she discovers that her job maybe more difficult than she predicted. The only place to stay in the mountain town is with a man who has a rough reputation among the ladies. And he wants something in return: a fake girlfriend for a week.

Ayden has no intentions of settling down. In fact, he'd love nothing more than to sell his bed and breakfast and focus on his construction business full-time. Marriage and babies are not in his future. So when his sister's meddling reaches an all-time high, he needs a way to get her off his back. And the new woman in town just might be the answer to his problem.

As Grace tries to find her sister and understand the man she's been shackled to, she has to fight the weather and the local women who consider her to be a threat. Toss in a jerk of an ex-boyfriend and you have an even bigger recipe for disaster. In the end, she may leave Mistletoe as a completely different woman and possibly even with a broken heart.

I've read another book by this author and I loved it, so it was easy for me to volunteer to review this one. And while I didn't hate the story, I didn't love it either. I considered quitting the book about halfway through, when I realized the story wasn't really going anywhere, but I persevered. And it did get better toward the end, but it just wasn't enough to save the story for me by that point.

What I liked about the book was mostly the idea of it. A fake girlfriend romance? Yes, please. Christmas-themed story to get me in the holiday mood? Yep, I wanted that too. But after only a few chapters, I could tell this wasn't exactly the story I thought it would be. While it was fairly well-written, I just couldn't bring myself to really enjoy it.

I mostly had trouble with connecting to and accepting the characters. Grace was the biggest pushover and probably the most pathetic female lead I have read about all year. I don't mind a confused heroine learning to trust herself and so on, but when I found out that she has broken up with her ex over 10 times, I lost pretty much all respect for her. Sometimes she would say something that impressed me, but then she would immediately do or say something to ruin it.

Ayden wasn't much better in the personality department. I wanted to like him since he did have a good sense of family. But his internal thoughts were likely what killed his character for me. I don't mind a hero who isn't a prince charming, yet I often found myself wondering why anyone would like this guy when he supposedly had throngs of women after him.

As for the plot coming to life, that part confused me too. I understood why Grace initially went there looking for her sister. I even understood the reason for coming across Ayden, since she needed a place to stay while there. But I didn't see the need for the fake girlfriend agreement when Ayden clearly had a handle on his lack-of-a-love-life. That part felt a little forced. The constant delaying in searching for her sister didn't help things either, I'm afraid.

Toward the end, the story did slowly begin to come together for me. I can't say that I rooted for this pairing by then, but I did want to see some sort of satisfying conclusion after all of the hell Grace went through for practically no reason at all. And the ending was pretty good, even if I didn't love the whole 'big secret' conspiracy part.

In closing...

Everyone has different tastes and this one just wasn't mine, but I will still read more from this author in the future. 3 suns!

Where did it all go wrong? Help me understand!

Have you ever had your wonderful day ruined for no good reason? Like you were going along just fine and suddenly everything just drops off the side of a cliff to crash and burn? Yeah, that's how I felt while reading this book. Super bummer and I'm actually quite sad about it.

This started off so well. I mean it was practically perfect for the first 2/3 of the book. Sure, the secondary characters were a little obnoxious and I occasionally wanted to choke out a character's parent, but everything else was great. Meg was a woman I could root for and Hart made me swoon over and over again. I was completely smitten with this story and the couple.

And then... Dun, dun, dun!

The twist happens, leaving me scratching my head and wondering how it could have gone so wrong so quickly. That was frustrating, to say the least. I don't mind a surprise or two being tossed in, but this one was confusing for me. It left me wondering where my beloved characters had gone. Hart was much too smart to suddenly turn so stupid. And Meg's plan to win his heart was just as terrible. What happened?

I think I just felt like the plot twist was entirely forced and then it drug on. When characters begin to behave in a way that is completely opposite of how they did for the first 3/4 of the book, I wonder if I really knew them at all. And Hart was a lot of things in the beginning but cruel wasn't one of them. I started to genuinely hate his character. Meg's scheming was a bit much as well. As if this wasn't enough, it had to go on for several chapters. In the end, I feel like I fell into a dark hole and I'm still there, sadly.

Does this have a happy ending? Yes, it does. Do I believe the ending is believable after such massive conflict between the couple? Not really. I think the story just turned too dark, too fast and just when I was thoroughly enjoying the light. It's a little depressing, to be honest. I wasn't prepared for it. Maybe this was a case of hating to see characters that I adored have to suffer for reasons that I can't understand. 

In closing...

I want to believe that this is an isolated incident and that other books in this series will leave me smiling. I'll have to read them to find out. Three suns!

With some cleaning up, it would be a better story.

Zoe isn't sure she should marry her long-time boyfriend, Derek. He isn't exactly what she wants in a husband and if she's being honest, she's still in love with his twin brother. So when the twin in question comes back into town with his lover and their eyes set on Zoe, she thinks this might be the sign she's been looking for. But Liam and Brent have some secrets up their sleeve that Zoe would never have guessed. And Derek? Well, he won't give Zoe up that easily either...

There were things I liked about this novella and things I didn't. Keep in mind that I have not read the original version of the story which was included in the anthology. My problems were mostly with the way the book was written/edited versus the actual story being told. So while I am critical in some regards, I didn't regret reading the book once I was finished.

I'm always lenient on grammar mistakes and typos with self-published works. On the other hand, when there is an editor listed or the book has a publisher, I am not so forgiving about errors because most of them obviously should have been caught. And unfortunately, this novella was full of them. There are punctuation blunders, wrong words used several times, and missing quotes among other things. 

But the biggest problem was, by far, a name mix-up at the very beginning. It says that Brent and Liam shared a womb, when it is supposed to be Derek and Liam. I checked and this error is also in the Kindle Unlimited version too. Definitely not a good place to mix up the names since we don't want to give anyone the impression that our lovers are brothers. *wide eyes*

Putting aside the errors and typos, I did find one other problem with the book. The main character, Zoe, is a pretty likable woman who seems to have a good idea of what her future with Derek would be like. She isn't one of these gals with the wool pulled over her eyes, so I was a little surprised when she takes the entire paranormal confession a little too easily. I mean, it's a pretty big secret and she was barely fazed. Even in a novella-length book, I wish it had been more realistic in that regard.

The two men who Zoe finds herself falling for are pretty good characters too. I was glad to see that they each had their own voice, which doesn't always happen with multiple male characters. They were a little high-handed with Zoe at the beginning, but some relationships are like that so it didn't bother me all that much.

What really saved the story for me was probably the love scenes. There is a lot of naughty time here and since there are three characters, there is quite a bit of variety in the scenes too. Once they began, I enjoyed them enough to overlook some of the other parts I liked a little less. The scene with Cassidy was a surprise, but I didn't mind it.

In closing... 

I think if this had been a full-length novel with more time for character and relationship development, it would be a more enjoyable story. Either way, it definitely could benefit from another pass with a good editor. Three suns!

A hundred kisses to break a curse?

If I'm being honest, this book was rather wordy and I skimmed quite a bit of it. Probably half of it. I realized in the first few chapters that it was a lot of telling and detail but light on the dialogue. Yet, I'm sure you're wondering why I rated this as a 'good read' when I skimmed most of it. Here's why.

This book had a lot of unique qualities and things I did enjoy. The main characters, for instance. I liked Deirdre from the start. I could see and understand her struggle with wanting to give up on ever having a marriage after the deaths of her husbands. I felt for her and wanted her to find a match that wouldn't die at dawn.

Even Alasdair was a likable character. There was a lot of secrecy surrounding his arrival and the real reason he was traveling through was slowly revealed as the story went on. He hid behind an alias for most of the book, but I still found him to be genuine and I rooted for him to find a way to win Deirdre's heart and break the curse.

The thing that really stood out to me was the magical element of the book. I have read a lot of fantasy with witches, clairvoyants, and the like. This story has a mixture of both and additional magics that I haven't really seen before. I think it was probably the curse and the mystery surrounding the odd relative, Venora, that kept me turning the pages. I could have done without some of the constant talk about the pending war though.

In closing...

A good story with magic, kisses, and swords. Three suns!

When the wrong person turns out to be perfect for you...

Ashley is tired of her life. Her boyfriend is a no-good jerk and she has a past that's impossible to outrun. She's always wanted a real family and her biological clock is ticking. When she finally gets the courage to break up with her moocher boyfriend, there is only one thing that Ashley wants to do. She's going to have a baby. One way or the other.

Just before Ashley is about to start her quest for motherhood, she meets a man who is wrong for her in every way. So why does being with him feel so good? Dean has a rough history too, and he has a video online to prove it. He also isn't the most responsible man in the world. He is terrible with money and can't pay attention to save his life.

So when Ash receives an offer from a doctor to father her child, she's sure that this is the better choice. She can't rely on Dean to provide for her and one sperm donor is just as good as another, right? But when the time comes to decide who she will make a baby with, Ashley realizes that she just might want the whole family package after all.

I'm coming to find that perhaps this author's writing isn't my cup of tea. I can't really pinpoint one specific thing, it's more of a collection of small book traits that I don't seem to be a big fan of. There may be a disconnect because the setting of this story is in Australia. There is terminology I don't quite understand, the dialogue is rather brash, and some of the humor is almost too awkward for me to find funny.

I also had a hard time with the heroine of the story. I didn't despise Ashley but I also didn't love some of her choices and internal dialogue. I could understand the fact that she wants a baby, but her judgement of Dean was rather harsh considering her own life choices had been pretty terrible until this point. She was also really selfish in the bedroom which irked me.

Dean was a fun character, despite the fact that he was written to be a complete numbskull. I found his personality to be endearing and unique. I hate that Ashley (and everyone, really) were so hard on him. He didn't deserve it. By the end of the book, I wasn't sure if Ashley deserved Dean either. He was such a sweetheart and very loyal to her even when she wasn't being kind in return.

But there was a highlight to the story and that was the intense love scenes. Even from the first one, I could appreciate the well-written bedroom antics in this book. Even when they weren't necessarily happening in the bedroom. In fact, the make-up scene was so darn good that I'm glad I read this story just for that one scene alone.

In closing...

Even though it may not be my cup of tea, it certainly could be yours. Three suns!

"Is that you, Theno my dear?" The Queen called out. "Have you come to try and stop me again? You can come out now if that's the case."

She waited for a response but he wasn't going to give her one. Nick was just waiting for the moment to attack. The cool, wet walls of the grotto were not a guarantee of protection against a man who used fire as a weapon. Theno didn't want to risk Lily or her sisters getting hurt on accident.

When she didn't get an answer the Queen decided to do something else about them. "Nick, please go and get my wayward troll. Bring him back to me and kill the rest of them."

"Gladly, my Queen."

What are the odds you'll find your match is a troll chained up in the basement?

Lily is trying to do best by her younger sisters. After inheriting a house from an unknown uncle, they move in straight away. The house is filled with strange items but no more than the one hidden in the basement: a creature shackled to a door. He's large and green and definitely not human. Setting him free is just the beginning of an adventure that teaches Lily and her sisters the truth about their family and themselves.

Theno can't remember how he came to be chained to a door in a world that isn't his own. His memories come back in flashes and only confuse him more. Who was he before he crossed the barrier between worlds and why did he leave his home? Better yet, who is this beautiful woman who insists on helping him despite the chance that he might have been a monster in his old life?

This will be one of those reviews that highlights both good and bad things about the story. I believe honest feedback is better for an author but also harder to come by. So while I may criticize elements of the book, remember there were things I liked about it, too. This shouldn't put anyone off from reading the book. Underneath the weaker writing skill was a fun story.

I'll start with pacing. Boy, this story is fast-paced. So fast, in fact, that I was often confused as to how we went from one place/time to another without any sort of break or transition between. In those instances, a scene break would have been beneficial. Having to go back and re-read a whole page just to understand what happened should not be necessary.

Since the pacing is fast, the story tends to suffer a bit. I think the relationship between Theno and Lily was a good match, but since it happened so quickly, it felt a lot more like insta-love than actual romance. And we all know how the general population feels about insta-love. Lily was understanding and trusting much too quickly and that made the relationship less realistic. If I found a creature trapped in my cellar, I wouldn't have reacted so calmly. My sisters would have freaked out, too. Even in fantasy, there needs to be a level of realism to make the story believable.

But it wasn't just the romance side that was smothered by the story moving so quickly. While reading, I was jerked around between scenes and new characters were introduced so fast that it was hard to get a good sense of where we were before we're thrust into another scene and meet yet another character. It was a very ambitious storyline. Maybe too ambitious.

I wanted to really become immersed in the story and that's hard to do when a scene barely skims the surface before it ends. Books are not like tv/movies. On the big screen, we have a visual aid to help us understand the story. We can see facial expressions and hear vocal tones. We can see the settings with our eyes. In a book, we need the author to paint the picture of the setting and draw the characters with their words.

One thing that cannot be disputed is the creativity of the story. This author has a knack for weaving together a tale with colorful characters and surprises. It was a mixture of new and old featuring fairy tale folk that we already know but with a twist to their stories. I was impressed by the fantasy story being told, overall. The big secret revealed at the end truly shocked me. But I did suspect that Nick wasn't what he appeared to be.

My last criticism is really the most important of all and that is the technicality of the writing. This is something that will come with experience, though an editor would certainly have helped the author to find her voice while avoiding most mistakes. There were several grammar errors and typos. Instances of 'telling' instead of 'showing'. Also words repeated, even in the same sentence. By the end of the first chapter, I could tell that this was a new author.
