SynopsisThey can never be together. The notion is laughable. Humans are inferior, a scourge on the Fae and on the magic passed down to them by angels millennia ago. And if Keen finds himself drawn to the tiny human female, he keeps it to himself. He won’t add to the half-breed problem that threatens his people’s existence.

Reese can’t stand Keen. He criticizes her clothing, won’t answer a straight question, and is too handsome for her peace of mind.

Her entire life, people have pegged Reese for a shallow, ditzy blond. She won’t accept the stereotype from the large, arrogant Fae too. But after Keen saves her life, she begins to question what truly lies beneath his stoic demeanor.

Forced together, Keen and Reese fight to survive among enemies, and Keen makes choices Reese couldn’t have predicted. She glimpses a side of him that is protective and dangerously seductive.

But Keen refuses to acknowledge their connection.

Until he's faced with the decision to betray his people, or lose Reese forever.

*This mature YA series is intended for readers 17 years and older.

**Each Halven Rising novel features a different couple and may be read as a standalone, but an overreaching story arc connects the series, so it's fun to read them in order.**

A RITA-nominated author, Jules Barnard began her publishing career in 2014 with Deep Blue, the first book in the contemporary Blue Series, hitting bestseller lists on Amazon, iBooks, and All Romance. Forbidden love... My favorite kind!

Reese has recently discovered that there are supernatural creatures living inside and parallel to the human realm. Fae, to be exact, along with their half-Fae offspring that are called Halven. Reese's roommate, Elena, and neighbor just happen to be Halven. But not just any. Nobles, descended from Fae royalty.

Elena was fortunately able to cure a deadly virus that threatened to end the Fae. But even though one threat is over, Reese suddenly finds herself being captured and held captive by enemy Fae, in one of their kingdoms. Her future is looking poorer by the minute!

Keen will do anything to protect Reese. Not only because he made a promise to Elena that he would find and save Reese, but also because the tiny woman greatly intrigues him. She stirs feelings inside of the Fae that he absolutely never thought he would feel for a human. It simply isn't proper for Fae to care for inferior humans or Halven. Yet, he does...

But it will take a sacrifice that even Keen wasn't expecting in order to ensure that Reese is kept safe from the self-appointed queen, Portia, who is bent on destroying any who get in the way of her rule. The Fae warrior will be forced to give up his growing connection to Reese and marry another, regardless of where his heart truly lies. A battle for love and control of the kingdoms is eminent.

This book was awesome! I liked the first book of the series quite a bit, but this one was even better. The chemistry between Keen and Reese was evident from the first moment he arrived to save her and it continued to grow as the story unfolded. Reese was a strong female lead who didn't back down from a fight and wasn't afraid to follow her heart. Keen's struggle between duty and love was realistic and made me smile several times during the intimate moments between him and his tiny human.

The book kept a steady pace and had a nice balance between action and romance. I picked it up and never put it down, staying up late to finish it. It was captivating. I only wish that we could have seen things from Keen's perspective a bit more. I really enjoyed his view of the events and watching his resolve slowly unfurl as he realized he was falling in love.

In closing...
Fingers crossed that the next book is coming soon! And 4.5 suns for this one!
