It's historical romance with a side of sore bottom...
Gabe is a highwayman, robbing from the rich to give to the poor people in his village. It's how he's been able to give back to those who took him in as a child. He only steals from people who can afford to lose some jewelry and useless baubles and he's careful not to get caught. That is, until he comes across a lady with a sassy mouth and nothing to offer him other than a kiss.
Caroline's first kiss sure was memorable. That's probably because it happened while she was being robbed, with a handsome highwayman, and while her lady's maid was passed out in the seat across from her. Caroline is unable to get the man out of her mind and when her family becomes desperate to come up with a small fortune to pay in gambling debts, she knows exactly where to turn. To the man who steals more than just jewels.
But even though Caroline is smart in her pursuit, robbing the robber of his score, she can't conceal herself enough. Gabe knows she's the same maiden he kissed and soon he's coming to her aid. He offers to help her get the money so she can avoid an unsavory marriage to a vile man. However, Caroline isn't exactly the docile type. And when she disobeys Gabe, there is a price to pay. The sort that leaves her rear red for days.
I can honestly say that this is the very first historical romance I've read with spanking involved. I knew when I saw Vanessa Liebe's name attached that there was a good chance this story would venture into pink-bottom territory. And Caroline was definitely a young lady who had trouble obeying, even though she knew the price she'd pay.
The plot was easy to follow and there were a few action scenes but nothing gruesome. There is also a subplot about Gabe's history that is slowly explored throughout. And the scum lord who preys on Caroline is a good bad guy. I was definitely rooting for him to get what he deserved. There were a few twists that I didn't see coming, too.
The book moves steadily along and I read the entire thing in just a few hours. I thoroughly enjoyed Caroline and Gabe's characters and their relationship as it developed from a highwayman duo to a pair of lovers. The love scenes were plenty steamy and spanking was really the only kink featured that you wouldn't find in any other historical romance. I highly recommend this one if you want a quick read with a little something naughty on the side.

This is the first historical romance I've read by this author but it won't be my last! Four suns!
