SynopsisCan a pirate learn that the only true treasure lies in a woman's heart?

Widowed Silence Hollingbrook is impoverished, lovely, and kind--and nine months ago she made a horrible mistake. She went to a river pirate for help in saving her husband and in the process made a bargain that cost her her marriage. That night wounded her so terribly that she hides in the foundling home she helps run with her brother. Except now that same river pirate is back...and he's asking for her help.

"Charming" Mickey O'Connor is the most ruthless river pirate in London. Devastatingly handsome and fearsomely intelligent, he clawed his way up through London's criminal underworld. Mickey has no use for tender emotions like compassion and love, and he sees people as pawns to be manipulated. And yet he's never been able to forget the naive captain's wife who came to him for help and spent one memorable night in his bed...talking.

When his bastard baby girl was dumped in his lap--her mother having died--Mickey couldn't resist the Machiavellian urge to leave the baby on Silence's doorstep. The baby would be hidden from his enemies and he'd also bind Silence to him by her love for his daughter.

Oh, yes!

I was waiting for a free moment to read this book. So glad I was able to fit it in. The few glimpses we've had in the series thus far, of the pirate Mickey O'Connor, have peaked my interest. So when I realized Mickey's story was next, I couldn't wait to read it.

For some reason (and I can't be the only one), when I think of our pirate king, I get a Charles Vane of Black Sails vibe. Mick is brutal, dangerous, and just oozes with raw sexuality. He takes what he wants and doesn't apologize for it. The ultimate bad-boy, I would say.

On the other side, we have Silence. A childless and lonely widow with a broken heart and sad history. But a tiny babe dropped onto Silence's doorstep (in a previous book) has become the saving grace that she needs. Little does she know, but the baby in question is the child of our pirate, the man Silence despises as much as the devil.

And when Mickey's enemies catch wind of his daughter's whereabouts, the pirate must make a drastic move to ensure the safety of the babe. He kidnaps the child, luring Silence to his not-so-humble palace, where she agrees to stay and care for the girl.

Of course, bringing a woman and child into his home upsets the balance. Soon Mickey finds out that, despite his best efforts, he just may not be the one in control anymore. And once Mick lets his guard down with Silence, he finds himself wanting to keep her around. Yep. Forever.

That's all I will say, so as not to spoil anything. But I will leave you with this handsome fellow. Mmmm...

In closing...
Of the three Maiden Lane books I've read so far, this one is my favorite! I liked it a bit more than the other two so I will give it a bit more, too. 4.5 suns!
