Hannah is need of a ship to retrieve a priceless artifact stone that she must deliver to London. When her father sends her to a smuggler for assistance, she expects he will jump at the chance to earn some extra coin. Unfortunately, he doesn't.
Red is a smuggler by choice, not necessity. The earl is aiding in the war efforts, undercover. So when a beautiful woman asks for his help, he doesn't want or need her money. However, turning her away sends her right into the clutches of an actual crook. To keep her from being taken advantage of, he finally agrees to help her get the stone to London.
The road is paved with difficulties. Wagons stuck in the mud, abandoned inns, bouts of sickness, and obnoxious travel companions are just a few of the problems that our couple run into along the way. But when the trip nears an end, Red and Hannah discover that they may not want to let the other one go.
I think I read this story in about four hours. No kidding. I was immediately drawn to the characters and their very different personalities. Hannah was independent and determined to see her task through. Red was reserved and stubborn. They both had to battle their own set ways to accommodate caring for someone else.
The romance was slow burning and what a fun burn it was. I enjoyed watching the pair fighting against their instincts to want one another. The twists and turns on the journey made me chuckle, too. The whole cursed stone theory was entertaining.
In closing...
I hope there will be more to come in this series! Four suns!
